Information

The .us domain is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the United States, overseen by the Department of Commerce (DOC). Established in 1985, it was one of the earliest ccTLDs and initially managed by Jon Postel. The operations of the localities within the .us TLD hierarchy were delegated to individuals, organizations, and State governments. In 2001, Neustar was appointed as the administrator of the .us domain with the objective to further develop and expand its operation. As of 2007, there were over a million domain names under the .us TLD, and it continues to grow at an average rate of 23% per year. The basic structure of the .us TLD includes organization, locality, state, and the US two-letter postal code.

Restrictions

To register a .us domain name, individuals must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States, while entities or organizations should be incorporated within one of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, or any U.S. possessions or territories, or organized under the laws of the U.S. government. Neustar implemented a Uniform Rapid Suspension policy in July 2014 to provide trademark owners with a faster and cheaper way to stop infringement domains on their trademarks. Any disputes regarding .us domain names should be filed to approved dispute resolution service providers such as the American Arbitration Association or the National Arbitration Forum. There are no known restrictions beyond these requirements for owning a .us domain.
