Information

.radio is a proposed new generic top level domain (gTLD) that aims to serve the global radio community. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), an international association of national broadcasters, has been selected by ICANN to operate this TLD. The EBU's application was designated as a Community Priority Application due to its representation of the radio industry and its intention to support traditional, webcasting, and streaming audio content. The registry backend for .radio is CORE.

Restrictions

The acquisition of the .radio domain is subject to certain restrictions due to its community designation. ICANN's rules prioritize applications that can justify a "community" designation, meaning that if the EBU can prove it represents the entire radio community and maintains this status, they will be delegated the TLD. However, if the EBU loses the community designation or fails to secure it, .radio will be awarded through an auction process to the highest bidder. Additionally, during ICANN 44 in Prague, concerns were raised regarding potential conflicts of interest due to the EBU's application for observer status in the GAC. BRS Media, another applicant, requested that the EBU withdraw its application, but the EBU was eventually accepted into the GAC. Despite these challenges, the EBU remains committed to providing a secure namespace for the radio industry and protecting against cybersquatting or competing interests.
