The ccTLD (country code top-level domain) .nu represents Niue, a small South Pacific island nation. Originally operated by the Internet Users Society - Niue (IUS-N), it is currently managed by Internetstiftelsen i Sverige, the Swedish Internet Foundation, which also oversees Sweden's .se TLD. The history of .nu dates back to 1997 when Bill Semich, an IT professional and early participant in ICANN's development, identified its potential as a business opportunity. Semich's company, WorldNames, provided the technical infrastructure for .nu until 2013, when control was transferred to IIS. The primary goal of IUS-N has been to provide free wireless internet access to Niue residents through Internet Niue.
The ownership and management of the .nu domain have been subject to various disputes and litigation. In late 2020, Niue initiated a proceeding to redelegate the TLD back to its control due to concerns over its operation by IIS. The request was sent to multiple ICANN bodies and the media, as active redelegation proceedings are exempt from ICANN's transparency rules. In February 2022, the Swedish Supreme Court ruled that Niue has standing to sue in this matter, allowing the legal battle to continue. Despite these ongoing efforts, there is no definitive resolution regarding the restrictions on owning or redelegating the .nu domain at this time.
