Information

SIDN, also known as Stichting Internet Domeinregistratie Nederland or the Netherlands Domain Registration Foundation, is a non-profit organization based in the Netherlands that manages and provides registry services for .nl domains. Established on April 25, 1996, by Piet Beertema, SIDN is accredited by ICANN and responsible for issuing all Dutch domain names. With around 1,800 registrars and ISPs operating under it, SIDN is a significant player in the Netherlands' digital landscape. As of July 2012, .nl was the third largest ccTLD globally, with one .nl domain for every five people in the country, making it the highest such ratio worldwide [1]. SIDN has implemented DNSSEC Tier 2 for the .nl zone since 2012 and had over 600,000 domain names signed as of August 2012.

Restrictions

When it comes to purchasing a .nl domain, there are some restrictions to consider. Individuals have been able to register second-level .nl domains since 2003 and third-level domains since 2000 [7]. However, SIDN discontinued the registration of personal domain names in 2007 [7]. SIDN is a member of ICANN's ccNSO and has had some issues regarding the implementation of IPv6 [3]. In addition, there have been concerns raised by SIDN about ICANN's budget planning and financial management. In April 2011, CEO Roelof Meijer expressed his dissatisfaction with ICANN's lack of clarity in its 2012 budget plan and the insufficient funds in its reserve fund [6]. Therefore, potential buyers should be aware of these issues when considering registering a .nl domain. [References: 1, 3, 5-7]
