The .mobi top-level domain (TLD) is a sponsored TLD that was introduced in 2006 and is used for websites optimized for mobile devices such as smartphones. The extension was developed by mTLD Top Level Domain Ltd., a subsidiary of Afilias, with the support and investment from major companies involved in mobile technology and communication, including Hutchison 3, GSM Association, Ericsson, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung, Telefonica Moviles, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Google, and Afilias itself. The name .mobi is derived from the word "mobile" and was chosen as it was considered the most internationally recognizable extension for mobile-related Internet content.
The acquisition of dotMobi by Afilias in February 2010 led to mTLD becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Afilias. However, there have been restrictions set out in the Registry Agreements for .pro and .mobi that forbid Afilias from owning more than a 15% share in the registrar company that sells the TLDs. In July 2013, Afilias requested ICANN to lift these restrictions. Given that .mobi is a sponsored TLD, it is tied to two advisory boards: the dotMobi Policy Advisory Board (PAB) and the .mobi Advisory Group (MAG), which are charged with representing the sponsoring community to mTLD and Afilias. The idea of an entire TLD dedicated to the mobile market was met with criticism and skepticism, including from Tim Berners-Lee and the W3C, who saw it as a potential fracturing of the web and believed that mobile access could be provided in a more consistent manner with a single, universal Internet. There are no restrictions on owning this domain, except for those mentioned above.
