.kyoto is a proposed new top-level domain (TLD) in the new gTLD program of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The Kyoto government has endorsed Kyoto Jyoho Gakuen, also known as The Kyoto College of Graduate Studies for Informatics, to apply for and manage this extension. Established in 1963, the university is a non-profit academic institution recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Education. Its primary goal is to provide education and contribute to social prosperity and happiness. If approved, .kyoto will serve Kyoto, Japan's historic center and former capital city, enhancing communications, commerce, and online communities.
There are certain restrictions in place for registering a domain under the .kyoto TLD. Eligible registrants include municipalities, local governments, public and private institutions, organizations, companies, businesses, residents of Kyoto, and those with a legitimate purpose for using a ".kyoto" domain. Registrants must comply with the registration agreement and Nexus Requirement at all times. The registry will conduct scans to ensure compliance and place non-compliant registrations on hold for 30 days. Failure to correct the issue within this period may result in deletion of the domain name. Additionally, acceptable domain names must not already be registered or blocked/reserved, meet technical requirements, and not have abusive or obscene meanings in Japanese, English, or other languages.
