Information

The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency TRAFICOM is the organization responsible for managing the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) of Finland, which is denoted by the .fi extension. Established in 1986, TRAFICOM took over management of the .fi domain from KPNQWest Finland in 2019 following a governmental reorganization. Prior to this, administrative functions were handled by the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (FICORA) while technical registry services were provided by KPNQWest Finland. The .fi domain was first delegated to the Tampere University of Technology in 1986 and underwent several changes in management over the subsequent decades.

Restrictions

The eligibility requirements for registering a .fi domain have evolved significantly over the years. As of 2014, Finnish persons living abroad, as well as private companies, are permitted to apply for .fi domain names. However, applicants must ensure that they do not infringe upon protected or trademarked names. The legislation governing .fi domain registration was liberalized in 2003, allowing companies to purchase domain names, and IDNs were introduced in 2005. In 2006, the availability of .fi domain names was extended to private persons. With the introduction of the Information Society Code in 2014, acquisition and maintenance of domain names became available through a "one-shop stop" where customers can acquire all services from one place. There are no restrictions on owning this domain, provided that applicants comply with the aforementioned eligibility requirements and do not infringe upon protected or trademarked names.
