Information

RED.ES is the registry for Spain's country code top-level domain (ccTLD), .es. Established in 2000, RED.ES is a governmental organization under the jurisdiction of the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. Its primary role is to manage and oversee the registration of domains with the .es suffix. Although RED.ES manages the .es domain, actual registrations are sold and purchased through accredited registrars. As of 2023, there were 107 such registrars. Usage of .es domains is popular in Spain, accounting for almost half of all registered domains in the country as of 2013. The regions with the highest percentage of .es registrations are Madrid, Catalonia, Andalusia, and Valencia.

Restrictions

The history of RED.ES and its governing organizations dates back to 1989 when the .es ccTLD was created by IRIS, the Spanish National Research and Academic Network. Over the years, management of RedIRIS passed from FUNDESCO to CSIC, a Spanish national research council, before finally being taken over by RED.ES in 2000 as a government agency. Registration policies for .es domains were initially very restricted but have been gradually liberalized since 2003, leading to significant growth in the number of registrations. Today, IDNs are supported, and there are over 2 million registered .es names. There are no specific restrictions on owning a .es domain, making it an accessible choice for individuals and organizations looking to establish a strong online presence in Spain.
