The NCBA is committed to using the surplus revenues earned from the registry to support cooperatives in underdeveloped countries through the Digital Divide Fund. The International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) is responsible for global marketing and outreach of the .coop sTLD. The domain was created during ICANN's TLD expansion program in 2000, and it is one of seven sponsored top-level domains delegated in the DNS root zone.

Restrictions

The ownership of a .coop domain is restricted to cooperatives, cooperative support organizations, and businesses owned by cooperatives. There are several accredited registrars for .coop, including EuroDNS, EnCirca, Names, Beyond Secura Gmbh (DOMAINREGISTRY.DE), AB Name, ISPGood, Domains.coop, Tuonome.it, Firstserver, and Gandi SAS.
