Information

SWITCH, represented by the .ch top-level domain (ccTLD), is an independent organization responsible for managing the internet infrastructure in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Established in 1987, SWITCH operates under the mandate of Switzerland's Federal Office of Communications. It manages both the .ch ccTLD for Switzerland and the .li ccTLD for Liechtenstein. The organization entered into an agreement with the Principality of Liechtenstein's Office for Communications in 2012 to manage registry operations for .li. SWITCH has a team dedicated to various departments, including infrastructure and identity services, community management, community solutions, registry and collaboration, and data, security & network. They also run Switzerland's independent multi-sector Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), which is a full member of the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST).

Restrictions

There are no restrictions on owning a .ch domain name, as long as the registrant complies with the rules and regulations set by SWITCH and ICANN. However, under the Ordinance on Internet Domains of 2014 in Switzerland, SWITCH ceased selling .ch domain names directly and handed over its client base to its registrars. This shift in focus allowed SWITCH to maintain a secure and stable Swiss Internet while ensuring that private individuals, businesses, and public bodies in Switzerland have access to a sufficient, reasonably priced, high-quality range of internet domain names. Registrants must adhere to the terms and conditions set by ICANN and their respective registrar.
