Information

.bio is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) that was delegated to the Domain Name System (DNS) Root Zone by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in June 2014. The registry operator for .bio is Afilias, which also manages the gTLDs .archi and .ski. This domain was originally managed by Starting Dot until Afilias acquired their rights in August 2016. The meaning of the term "bio" is diverse, as it can generally mean "life," while also being a prefix for various words such as biography, bioclimatology, and biotechnology. However, in over ten languages covering fifty-two nations, "bio" also means "organic." To respect European Union standards for organic food, this domain will have regulations in place for those intending to use it for organic food products.

Restrictions

The acquisition and implementation of the .bio domain have faced several challenges. The French Government issued a GAC Early Warning regarding the application due to concerns over international standards on agricultural products and organic food, fearing potential consumer harm or confusion if the TLD were used for non-organic purposes. Additionally, the European Commission flagged the application outside of ICANN's defined remediation processes, expressing their desire to open a dialogue with the applicant but not considering themselves legally bound to ICANN processes. The Biotechnology Industry Organization filed both a community objection and a legal rights objection against the application, which were later withdrawn and dismissed, respectively. Despite these challenges, Starting Dot (now Afilias) signed a Registry Agreement with ICANN on March 6, 2014, allowing them to become the registry operator for .bio.
