The .au domain, represented by auDA (Australian Domain Administration Ltd), is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Australia. Established in 2001, auDA is responsible for managing and overseeing the operation of the .au ccTLD. With more than 2.3 million registered domain names as of March 2011, the .au domain is among the top 10 largest ccTLDs globally. The domain contributes significantly to Australia's economy, with approximately $475 million generated in 2011, primarily from registration and hosting of domains. AuDA is a member of the Asia-Pacific Top Level Domain Association (APTLD) and has established the auDA Foundation, a charitable trust aimed at promoting education and research activities related to the Internet for the benefit of the Australian community.
AuDA's relationship with ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) began in 2001 when auDA requested IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) to re-delegate the .au ccTLD to the organization. After receiving the Australian government's endorsement, ICANN approved the redelegation of the .au ccTLD to auDA under a sponsorship agreement in October 2001. Chris Disspain, auDA's CEO, has been actively involved with ICANN, serving as the Council Chairman of ICANN's Country Code Names Supporting Organization and later becoming a member of the ICANN Board in June 2011. In July 2022, Jordan Carter joined auDA in the newly created role of Internet Governance and Policy Director.
