Information

The .ao top-level domain represents Angola on the internet and is currently managed by the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technologies (MTTI). The domain has a rich history, having been previously managed by the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade Agostinho Neto (FCCN) in the mid-1990s. Later, the Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional (FCCN), which manages the .pt top-level domain for Portugal, provided technical services for the .ao domain. In 2013, Associação DNS.PT was created to manage the .pt domain and provide technical services for several other ccTLDs, including .ao. The IANA Root Zone Database was updated in October 2014 to reflect the change in technical contact to DNS.PT. In January 2018, the mission of the MTTI was established as the entity responsible for the policy and strategy of telecommunications and information technologies in Angola. The management and operation of the .ao top-level domain were transferred to the MTTI in August 2018.

Restrictions

There are certain restrictions on owning a .ao domain. The Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technologies (MTTI) is responsible for the policy and strategy of the domain, and any requests for registration or changes must be made through them. Additionally, the working committee created in October 2018 to transfer management of the .AO top-level domain to MTTI was tasked with "strengthening the security and protection of the digital sovereignty of the Angolan State in cyberspace, with technical and administrative measures." It is important for potential registrants to ensure that their intended use of the domain aligns with these goals and does not infringe on Angola's digital sovereignty. Proposed administrative contacts must also be Angolan citizens or entities registered in Angola.
