Information

The Albanian Electronic and Postal Communications Authority (AKEP) manages the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Albania, which is denoted by the .al extension. Established in 1998, AKEP is responsible for overseeing the registration and management of all .al domains. Initially, the organization only allowed Albanian companies to register .com.al, .net.al, and .org.al domains. However, in 2013, regulations were amended to allow foreign companies and individuals to purchase .al domains as well. AKEP accredited its first registrars that year. The history of the .al ccTLD can be traced back to 1992 when it was first created under the University of Tirana's Faculty of Natural Sciences. It officially became a registry in 1998 and began defining the rules and procedures for domain name delegation.

Restrictions

There are no restrictions on owning a .al domain, as foreign companies and individuals have been permitted to register them since 2013. Prior to that year, only Albanian citizens and companies could register .com.al, .net.al, and .org.al domains. AKEP, the organization responsible for managing the .al ccTLD, has five registrars from which individuals and businesses can purchase their desired domain names. These registrars are all Albanian companies. The registration process and requirements may vary between registrars, so it is recommended to check with them directly for specific information.
